Past papers are the best way to prepare students for the experience of an examination. They are also a great tool for measuring your students’ level of understanding and can identify any weaker subject areas, helping you guide your teaching in line with their needs. Doing past papers is not a way of teaching yourself: it is mainly a way of checking your learning. You revise, you do a past paper, and you look at the Mark Scheme to check it. If it’s good, perhaps do another one to be on the safe side. And always look at the Examiners’ Reports, because they tell you a huge amount about where students got marks, and where they tended to lose them. UK exams are designed to test your understanding, not just your ability to memorize prescribed answers. So it is no good just wanting to know how many past papers you have to practice in order to have learned all the questions and all the matching answers.
